Founded in 1955, the Institute for Local Government has been serving local officials’ information needs for 60 years, assisting local leaders to govern openly, effectively and ethically, work collaboratively and foster healthy and sustainable communities. While respecting and honoring its past, the Institute is also intently focused on the present and future. In these difficult economic times, the need for the Institute’s materials for local officials is even greater.

The Institute envisions a future in California in which:

  • People value their local public institutions.
  • Local agencies effectively deliver public services.
  • All segments of the community are appropriately engaged in key public decisions.
  • Decision-makers make informed policy choices based on their best sense of the public’s interest.

The Institute’s effectiveness in promoting good government at the local level is greatly enhanced by its close working relationship with the associations that represent counties, cities and special districts: the California State Association of Counties, the League of California Cities and the California Special Districts Association.

The Institute’s relationship with CSAC, CSDA and the League notwithstanding, the Institute invites all local officials to take advantage of the Institute’s resources. The Institute also welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with other local agency associations in pursuit shared commitments to good government at the local level.
