Hello Friends of Deliberative Democracy–
There’s no two ways about it. I’ve been out of touch lately. The months have just flown by. I promise a proper Bulletin soon, but in the meantime, there are two exciting opportunities to get more involved with DDC.
First, now is the perfect time to join DDC! The Deliberative Democracy Consortium is a global network of organizations, scholars, and practitioners, all working in the field of deliberation and public engagement. DDC is one of the few places where the best scholarship and the most innovative practice in deliberative democracy come together. Every time I meet with DDC members, I come away enriched in my own thinking and practice.
But DDC draws its vitality from its members. Though we keep the network intentionally small and selective, we want to make sure that we spark conversations amongst the very best thinkers and doers in our field. So–of course–that includes you. And, we have recently added an individual membership. I would be so pleased if you and/or your organization would consider joining DDC today. You can find membership information here.
And, DDC is hosting a very special gathering in Washington, D.C. at the end of October. On the evening of October 30 and all day on October 31, 2019, the Deliberative Democracy Consortium is convening researchers, scholars, and deliberative democracy practitioners in Washington, D.C., to explore the intersection of deliberative democracy with human cognition, social and emotional intelligence, and moral decision making.
We will explore questions such as:
1) Given what we know about human cognition and moral development, is deliberative democracy feasible?
2) At what scale?
3) Under what conditions?
This meeting will give scholars, practitioners, funders, and others an opportunity to explore both the promise and the limitations of deliberative democracy in the context of human behavior and development. The meeting may result in an edited volume; future convenings; an action plan; a statement of shared values; promising partnerships; etc.
Attendance will be capped to ensure meaningful conversation, so please register here as soon as possible.
I would love to see you get more involved in DDC. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
Looking forward to seeing you in Washington next month!
